Carlsbad

The historic spa town of Carlsbad became a UNESCO heritage site in 2021. Its unique architecture, exemplary of the ‘belle époque’, imbues the town with a magical atmosphere. Over the centuries, the many prominent guests who spent their summers here include Beethoven, Dvorak, Smetana, Goethe, Schiller and the Ethiopian emprorer Haile Selassie. More recently, the town was used as a backdrop for the James Bond film ‘Casino Royale’.

Carlsbad, or Karlovy Vary, is located in the heart of Europe in the Czech Republic, close to the German border. Prague, Dresden, and Bayreuth are about two hours drive away.

The nearest international airports are Prague, Dresden and Nuremberg. Carlsbad is situated in a valley surrounded by the beautiful ‘Kaiserwald’ (Emperor’s Forest). Amongst a plethora of hotels, the two five star establishments Grand Hotel Pupp, and the Hotel Imperial, take pride of place. They offer excellent swimming pools, sauna, wellness programmes and medicinal treatments.

The Spa of the Savoy Westend Hotel (*****), - the most exclusive boutique hotel in the city - is located in a large Art Nouveau villa on an elevation. The hotel also offers various forms of massage treatments.

Several architecturally outstanding halls are available for cultural events.

The Municipal Theater is a neo-Rococo building with a proscenium curtain painted by the young Gustav Klimt. It has been completely restored and can seat 500 spectators.

The Art Nouveau hall in the Hotel Pupp is a concert and ballroom that can accommodate 1000 spectators.

A new, smaller concert hall will be available in July 2023 in the historic Kaiserbad. This magnificent late nineteenth-century building was designed by Viennese theater architects Helmer and Fellner. It is undergoing extensive restoration.

Guest Artist: Saleem Ashkar

The Arab-Israeli concert-pianist Saleem Ashkar is at home on all the world's most prestigious stages (Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall London, Berlin Konzerthaus). Amongst his many recordings, there are the complete Beethoven sonatas for Decca and the Mendelssohn piano concerti with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Riccardo Chailly.
